SMS PTA president letter - june 19th, 2022
Good Morning, SMS Families:
A huge thank you to the Student Organization and our PTA liaisons to the 8th Grade Celebration, Hulya Sener O’Doherty and Stephanie Israel, for their collaborative work in making Friday’s event special for our graduating students!
Congratulations to our 8th graders and to all of our families who are moving onto high school! The SMS PTA wishes you an easy transition and a lot of learning, growth and good times in the years to come!
Wishing all the best to those members of faculty and staff who are retiring -- Susan Lopez-Leach (Main Office); Jami Barzelatto (Cooper House Office); and David Wixted (Public Speaking). Thank you for years of dedication to Scarsdale Middle School!
It has been a privilege to serve as your PTA President this year and I’ve loved partnering and collaborating with so many teachers, parents and staff in our community. A huge shout out to our 2021-22 PTA Executive Committee -- Deb Lichtenstein, Sam Carter, Ophira Cukierman, Stephanie Klingsberg, Lori Harrison, Yi Yang, our faculty liaison, Melissa Salvatori and our principal, Meghan Troy. At the end of the week, I am turning over the reins to the amazing Deb Lichtenstein and your 2022-23 Executive Committee.
Have a great last week, SMS!
Community is critical to our overall well being and as this school year comes to a close, students will have opportunities to engage with those in other areas in their lives. Whether it’s with extended family, camp friends or the families in your neighborhood, maintaining a sense of community imparts purpose, belonging and resilience since our health and happiness are inextricably linked with our connections. A summer book club serves as a great way to cultivate community.
The Wellness Committee would like to wish the SMS community a fun, safe and restorative summer!

SMS PTA Community Service
The last day for the Community Service new and gently-used school supplies drive is Tuesday, June 21. Please consider donating any school supplies that are in good condition (gently-used condition is okay) to Hope Community Services. There will be boxes set up outside of the House Counselors’ Offices and in the Great Hall. Scarsdale Lion's Heart Members will make sure that the supplies are collected and given to families who struggle to afford basic school supplies like paper, markers, books, pens, pencils, calculators, erasers, rulers, notebooks, and binders. Thank you for helping -- these supplies are very much appreciated by the families who receive them.

Happy Father’s Day!
The first Fathers' Day service occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, after hundreds of men died in the worst mining accident in U.S. history. Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a dedicated minister, proposed a service to honor all fathers. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired by Anne Jarvis and the idea of Mothers' Day. Her father, William Jackson Smart, a farmer and Civil War veteran, was also a single parent who raised Sonora and her five brothers by himself, after his wife Ellen died giving birth to their youngest child. Within a few months, Sonora had convinced the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA to set aside a Sunday in June to celebrate fathers. It did not become a national holiday, however, until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law.
Juneteenth commemorates the date that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 to take control of the state and to ensure that all enslaved people would be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. Juneteenth is now celebrated throughout the U.S. to honor African American freedom and achievement. Learn more about African American history on the SMS PTA DEI African American Heritage page.
